چکیده :

A 2y full term recumbent pregnant heifer presented with amniotic sac rupture and laboring from the previous night. Rectal temperature was 38.9⁰C, heart rate 72/bmin, respiratory rate 27/min with pale mucus membranes. The udder was edematous with colostrum. Blood values were normal with a negative Rose Bengal agglutination test. Forelimbs and hind limbs were in the birth canal with a one limb and tail protruding suggesting a dorso-sacral position. In our view, cervical dilatation was sufficient to deliver the fetus and the birth canal was hence lubricated liberally. The male Schistosomus reflexus fetus was extracted with fetal membranes through the vagina by controlled traction of the hind limbs whilst forelimbs were pushed cranially into the abdominal cavity. Radiography suggested spinal inversion of the fetus. The cow was then treated with 20000 IU/kg penicillin-streptomycin intramuscularly (IM) for 5 days, 2mg/kg Flunexin meglumin IM for 3 days, 30 IU/kg Oxytocine and 250ml Calcium Magnesium Phosphate intravenously followed by another 250 subcutaneously. The day after intervention, the cow was able stand and months later delivered a healthy female calf. The procedure in this particular case, did not require epidural anesthesia, fetotomy, episiotomy or cervicotomy. Images of the procedure are presented.
