Prevalence of giardia parasite infection among elementary school students in Sabzevar city in 2016

Background: Giardiasis is a relatively common parasitic disease caused by the giardia lamblia's protozoa. This parasite is spread throughout the world. It is an asymptomatic disease, but in some cases it causes acute or compulsive symptoms. Contamination of this parasite can occur at any age, but it occurs more often at the time of childhood. Methods : This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Giardia parasite among the primary school students of Sabzevar in 2016. In order to investigate the following results: In 2016, 2154 people (girls and boys) were randomly assigned to a stool test, results showed that a total of 195 (9.05%) students were infected with Giardia, 77(39/48%) female students and 118 (60.51%)male students had Giardia infection, most of the age was between 9 and 11 years old. The most common symptoms were abdominal pain and the least common was diarrhea and vomiting Results: Regarding the results, it is recommended that families play an important role in informing their children about the health problems. On the other hand, the most important factor in transmission of this parasite is the lack of observance of personal and social health. Therefore, health education to increase the awareness of families and treatment of infected people can reduce the infection rate of this parasite.
