Abstract: Extremely fine-grained basalts were commonly used to manufacture both lithic artifacts and building stones found in the Ardebil province during the Safavid period. Whole rock geochemical fingerprinting of these basaltic rocks can help identify the geologic source of these artifacts/building stones. However, fingerprinting reveal at least two distinct basalts sources in the Ardebil province for lithic artifacts/building stones. Thus, whole-rock based sourcing could have wider application outside of the Ardebil province. Keywords: Basaltic rocks, Lithic artifacts, Building stones, Safavid period, Ardebil, Iran.
