In petroleum and natural gas engineering, attention is usually focused on regions of co-existence of liquid and vapor, which are the two phases most commonly encountered in field applications. Petroleum reservoirs are broadly classified as oil or gas reservoirs. These broad classifications are further subdivided depending on  The composition of the reservoir hydrocarbon mixture.  Initial reservoir pressure and temperature.  Pressure and temperature of the surface production.  Location of the reservoir temperature with respect to the critical temperature and the cricondentherm. The experimental or the mathematical determinations of reservoir conditions and also one of the most useful phase behavior visualizations commonly called phase diagrams. One such diagram is called the pressure-temperature diagram or p-T envelope.Figure1-1 shows a typical pressure-temperature diagram of a multicomponent system with a specific overall composition. Although a different hydrocarbon system would have a different phase diagram, the general configuration is similar. Each envelope represents a thermodynamic boundary separating the twophase conditions (inside the envelope) from the single-phase region (outside). p-T diagrams help visualize fluid production paths from reservoir to surface and assist in the development of best production schemes and strategies.
