چکیده :

Construction of expressways by the extension of two way single road in the recent years at Khuzestan province has been perceived to have had major effect in reducing road accidents. The studies presented by researchers approves the results, but it is assumed that each of the roads has to be studied specifically; as there are other factors involved in road accidents, such as geometry of a road, topography, road side development and many other factors, which has to become into consideration. Ahvaz-Hamidieh route has experienced changes in the last decade as this less important road with local use has turned into a major road connecting the capital of the province to a new international border with neighboring country, which has changed the traffic pattern and volume for passenger travel and transit of commodities. The increase of road accidents forced the local government to expand the existing road into an expressway and other measures of safety means. The need for a study of effectiveness of road expansion on this route, which also services many other economic and urban developments such as agricultural fields, extension of urban development, oil field excavations and industrial sites in the recent years in the need of local government. This article aims to analyze the degree of effectiveness of road separation in reducing road accidents and presenting other safety measures for further accident reduction. Traffic data produced by the local transport office, highway police as well as other road safety officials, for a four year period of 2008-2012 ( post-development period) and the data based on pre-development years as the main information used by analysis modeling methods provides interesting results for further safety projects use in this route. The results identify comprehensive solutions which can be of use for similar road development programmes.
