Drought and dehydration are one of the major dangers for the successful production of crops in Iran and the world. Therefore, the damage and resistance mechanisms of plants to these types of tensions have been studied more. There are many reasons why, irrespective of the type of stress, the plant will be exposed directly or indirectly to dehydration. A fundamental solution to eliminating or mitigating the effects of environmental conditions that creates tensions is to find special numbers that have a set of desirable traits. In order to investigate the effect of water stress on germination and seedling growth characteristics of 10 alfalfa cultivars, two separate experiments were carried out in Petri dish (seed germination) and flower (seedling growth) as factorial experiment in a completely randomized design with three replications in The research center of Shahid Mansour Zargaran, Ahwaz, was executed. Factors in both experiments included five levels of low water stress 0, -0.4, -0.6, -0.9 and -1.1 MPa, and 10 alfalfa cultivars including: Rehnani, Masasarsa, Qomi, Ghareh Yonjeh, Bami, Esfahani, Baghdadi, Chaleshtari, Hamedani and Yazdi. The results of seed testing indicated that germination, germination percentage, germination rate, mean daily germination, root length and root dry weight decreased drainage stress. In vegetative growth stage, root and shoot length and seedling dry weight decreased with increasing dehydration stress. The highest susceptibility index of SSI to high and middle aged varieties was allocated with mean values of 1.11 and 1/1, respectively. The highest water deficit stress index was associated with a mean of 0.91 to Baghdadi.
