Purpose – The paper presents the concept of Supply Chain Management (SCM) and that of the common platform (CP) and illustrates how CP can contribute to integrate the supply chain. Based on the theoretical and descriptive literature, several terms related to this topic are extracted. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper it is tried to develop the integrated framework based on inductive approach and our supply chain and common platform observations of industrial practices and our review of the literature. After reviewing literature and the practical data that was collected by observations in manufacturing, we set up a first level CP-SCM conceptual model. On this case study, we studied several practices and asked the experts about critical questions and several challenging problems associated with integrating the supply chain and common platform that were unanswered before. Findings – By applying this concept, chain members can reduce manufacturing variability, i.e. the variety of parts, materials, suppliers and etc, and thereby enable companies to quick response in market by producing variety of products and mass customization. Hence after reviewing these subjects, it is tried to provide analyses and clarify the relationship between CP and SCM factors and drivers and their effect on firms’ performance .Finally it is tried to develop an integrated architecture as a frame work by applying common platform strategies in supply chain management in order to ensure the increasing value in SCM in an effective way. Hence our research indicates that it is be better to lead in integrated CP-SCM than to individual systems. Research implications/limitations – Because of global competition and the trend towards obtaining competitive advantages in a market based economy, the network chain members are forced to focus on value creation and sharing risks and gains in order to success. Firms need to manage the flow of materials, information, payments, and services from suppliers, factories and warehouses to the final consumer in an integrated and effective manner. Practical implications – The logic of applying common platform in manufacturing area is to simplify the offering and processing of products in order to reduce part variety this will be accomplished by standardizing components and resource sharing strategy and will result in the reduction costs, time and other non value added factors. Originality/value – This work is one of the first to present a framework .The main research questions behind this work concern the following three main aspects: understanding why we apply CP in SCM, describing where of the chain we can apply it or which of the functions are the good choices and guiding how we can apply it?
