The effect of Cinnamon on AST and ALT liver enzyme measurement in diabetic rats by Stereptozotocin

Abstract The diabetes is a disease related to the endocrine glands with metabolic complications that result in hyperglycemia and arise from a defect in insulin function, insulin secretion or both of them. Clinical symptoms consist of: polyuria, lose weight and etc. It has destructive effects on liver function; Since the diabetes is increasing nowadays and herbal medicine which are less harmful like cinnamon are used as a blood glucose reducer, this study has done to evaluate the effect of Cinnamon on liver enzyme ALT and AST activity in rat. This is an experimental study. 30 rats, weighing 150-200gr were selected for this study. The rats were allocated randomly in to three equal groups: treatment group, diabetic control group and healthy control group. The Stereptozotocin was injected intraperitoneal in dose of 60 mg/ kg for diabetes to be induced. Treatment group received cinnamon aqueous 250 mg/kg/animal/day, for 28 days by gavage. Both of the control groups were gavaged with distilled water for same experiment. After conforming the diabetes was induced, we measured blood AST and ALT levels before and after prescribing cinnamon aqueous and in the first and the last day of the treatment (day 1 and day 28). After collecting the data, they were analyzed by SPSS20 and statistic test. Results have shown that enzyme activity and the AST and ALT measurement have increased in diabetic control group rather than healthy control group, and meaningful changes were observed (p <0/05). Also enzyme activity and AST and ALT measurement have decreased in treatment group (p <0/05). Findings have confirmed that using cinnamon causes enzyme activity reduced and also reduction in AST and ALT measurement. So we can use it as a blood glucose reducer and liver enzyme activity reducer.
