Alveolar bone crest changes in immediate versus delayed implant placement

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate bone loss following immediate & delayed implant placements during 12 months of follow up. Materials & Methods: In this clinical trial, 46 patients separately randomized for receiving immediate & delayed dental implant. Type of implants & the loading time were similar in each groups. The site & suitable dimension of implants were determined according to periapical radiographs. It should be mentioned the condition of taking radiographs, development & fixation procedures were the same for all cases & review of samples was done by guiding counselor. At standard condition with reference point to alveolar bone crest were measured by AutoCAD 2007 computer software. Radiographs were taken as soon as implant inserted. Results: The mean changes of alveolar bone crest for immediate implant versus delayed implant were 2.26 mm & 2.21 mm respectively. According to Mann-Whitny Test there was not significant difference between immediate & delayed implant placements. (p = 0.952 ) Conclusions: The results were similar in both groups. Although this is important to mention that patients were evaluated for 12 months, the long term survival rate is more important & further studies need to be designed with patients & longer follow up.
