Distributed Generation (DG) sources are becoming more prominent in distribution systems due to increased demand for the electrical energy. Optimal placement of DG results in reduction of objective functions like losses, costs of electrical generation and voltage deviation. This paper presents the determination of the optimal location and sizing of the DG. The heuristic optimization technique named Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is utilized to search for an optimal solution of the DG placement problem in this work. The objectives consist of minimization of losses of distribution system and optimization of voltage profile. A detailed performance analysis is carried out on IEEE 33 bus test system to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. High performance of the proposed algorithm in the mention system is verified by simulations in MATLAB software. In order to illustrate the feasibility of proposed method, we have considered three cases including one DG unit, two DG units, and three DG units. Results of the case study show the proper siting and sizing of DG sources are important to improve the voltage profile, and reduce losses of distribution system. The main feature of the algorithm refers to its accuracy and calculation speed.
