The importance of biogas as an effective energy source in the waste management department of the municipality of Mashhad

The necessity of energy and bio-environment conservation is one of the very serious and fundamental issues of the human societies of today. Looking at the global situation of renewable energies shows that the biomass energy accounts for the largest share of the global application among these sources. The vast country of Iran is rich in terms of biomass resources. Based on the studies conducted by the Department of Energy in 2001, the Iranian biomass resource potential was calculated as much as 132 million barrels of crude oil equivalent for which agricultural-forestry wastes, livestock wastes, municipal wastes, industrial wastes and water-wastes are in priority. The causes of our country’s interest in taking advantage of the energy from biomass resources include the use of clean energy, diversification of the country's energy basket and coordination with the world community to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the environmental pollutants. This paper tries to not only introduce the biogas, but also examine the performance of the waste management department of the municipality of Mashhad in terms of setting-up the biogas factory. In the end, besides conclusion, recommendations will be presented in order to improve the status of this important sort of energy in the country.
