The objective of the study reported herein was to shed some light on transport characteristics of
rural areas in Iran. For selected agriculture and livestock based economy villages relevant transport
information was gathered and analyzed. The villages presented typical farm based economy with
rural community populations in the range of 500 to 2500 persons. Socio-economic and trip
information was gathered through a home based interview survey. The collected data and other
relevant accessible information were analyzed to determine rural transport patterns. The trip
purpose, generation, distribution and mode choice patterns were found to be significantly different
as compared with urban areas.
