The effect of Cordia myxa aqueous on blood glucose levels in diabetic rats by stereptozotocin

Cordia myxa is an herb that is found in south area of Iran. This herb is used as laxative, expectorant and in dysphonia in traditional medicine. Recently, this is used as a remedy for diabetes in traditional medicine too. Treatments for diabetes include drugs and insulin, but many people consider usage of herbal medicines in which they are diabetes ameliorant in experience, and one of these herbal medicines is “Cordia myxa”. So this study has done to evaluate the effect of cordia myxa on blood glucose levels in diabetic induced rats by Stereptozotocin. This is an experimental study. 30 rats, weighing 150_200gr were selected for this study. The rats were allocated randomly in to three equal groups: treatment group, diabetic control group and healthy control group. The Stereptozotocin was injected intraperitoneal in dose of 60 mg/ kg for diabetes to be induced. Treatment group received aqueous 250 mg/ kg /animal / day, for 28 days by gavage. Both of the control groups were gavage with distilled water for same experiment. After conforming the diabetes was induced, we measured blood glucose levels before and after prescribing cordia myxa aqueous and in the first and the last day of the treatment (day 1 and day 28). After collecting the data, they were analyzed by SPSS20 and statistic test. Findings have shown that blood glucose levels have increased in diabetic control group rather than healthy control group, and meaningful changes were observed (p<0/05); and also blood glucose levels have decreased in treatment group rather than diabetic control group (p<0/05). According to the results, “cardia myxa” can be used as a depressor of blood glucose levels and thereupon, as a diabetes ameliorant.
