Faunistic study of arthropods in military bases in Sabzevar city, Iran

Background: Arthropods are the largest group of animals, and they are important due to transmission of parasitic, viral, infectious diseases that created many health problems for humans. Accumulation of human groups, especially in military barracks, soldier sanatoriums, and lack of basic sanitation facilities in such places increase the occurrence of arthropods epidemics. Methods: In order to this study all arthropods in Sabzevar military bases were evaluated by Direct sampling, aspiration methods and insect traps. Results: Overall, in this study, 359 arthropods belonging to two sub category, 5 orders, 10 families, 9 sub families,15 genus, 12 species were identified. Among the identified species of arthropod, some of the most important carriers of the major disease, such as Phlebotomus papatasi and Ph. serganti (vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis) were present. Conclusion: Given the high importance and the transmission of serious diseases by arthropods to humans, an appropriate and planned strategy to minimize the population of arthropods is absolutely necessary.
