In this study, we described the synthesis and characterization of new poly Schiff base compound poly-2-(2,5-dichlorobenzylideneamino)phenol. First, Schiff base monomer sal-2,5-Clan was prepared from the reaction of salycilaldehyde and 2,5-dichloroaniline. Then sal-2,5-Clan used as precursor to give its corresponding polymer compound in the presence of NaOCl as a oxidant in alkaline medium. Both monomer and polymer were characterized by FT-IR, UV-Vis and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. TG/DTA analyses showed that poly-2-(2,5-dichlorobenzylideneamino)phenol is more stable than sal-2,5-Clan against thermal decomposition. The weight losses of sal-2,5-Clan and PDCBAP were found to be 2.7% and 62% at 740°C, respectively. Additionally, the crystal structure of sal-2,5-Clan has been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography.
