The effect of cinnamon on blood glucose level and changes in rat weight in diabetic rats by Stereptozotocin

The diabetes is a common disease that nowadays, two third of people all over the world are affected by. It happens because of different reasons, such as insulin secreting cells destruction in pancreas. The most important symptoms are polyuria, polyphagia and polydipsia. Herbal extracts have significant position in traditional medicine and have been used for years for curing different diseases. One of this herbal extracts is cinnamon. Cinnamon have some components that improve the insulin function in glucose transmission to cellule. So this study has done to evaluate the effect of cinnamon on blood glucose levels and changes in rat weight in diabetic induced rats by Stereptozotocin. This is an experimental study. 30 rats, weighing 150-200gr were selected for this study. The rats were allocated randomly in to three equal groups: treatment group, diabetic control group and healthy control group. The Stereptozotocin was injected intraperitoneal in dose of 60 mg/ kg for diabetes to be induced. Treatment group received cinnamon aqueous 250 mg/kg /animal /day, for 28 days by gavage. Both of the control groups were gavaged with distilled water for same experiment. After conforming the diabetes was induced, we measured blood glucose levels and rats weight before and after prescribing cinnamon aqueous and in the first and the last day of the treatment. After collecting the data, they were analyzed by SPSS20 and statistic test. Findings have shown that blood glucose levels have increased in diabetic control group rather than healthy control group, and meaningful changes were observed (p<0/05); and also blood glucose levels have decreased in treatment group rather than diabetic control group (p<0/05). Additionally, Rats weight has increased in diabetic control group rather than healthy control group and it has decreased in treatment group rather than diabetic control group (p<0/05).
